Donations Needed for Four Legged Friends

Cable

Cable

I stopped in at the Kyle animal shelter, P.A.W.S., and found them in desperate need of donations. Everything from dog and cat food to grooming supplies (clippers) to washers and dryers (they said any working ones will do..they'll use them until they break).

Click on a photo to visit their Web site. Here's a little bit about them from the site.

P.A.W.S.' purpose is to prevent cruelty to all animals. P.A.W.S. (Public for Animal Welfare Society, Inc.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), organization and shelter for animals, serving Hays and surrounding counties in central Texas.

P.A.W.S.' mission is to care for, protect and find quality homes for abandoned and neglected animals; to aid in the reduction of pet overpopulation; and to provide community education for the mutual benefit of animals and people.

P.A.W.S. envisions a time when our community celebrates the human-animal bond the overpopulation problem is solved; permanent homes for all animals are insured; and all animal suffering ends.

P.A.W.S. is available to visit schools, churches, and civic organizations to help people learn about the issue of cruelty to animals, and what they can do to help.

Dog-gone sign

Cable

I found this in someones front yard. This is about the most inventive "Don't let your dogs do their business in my yard" sign I've ever seen.

Oh.. and if you can't leave home without your dog... I found a site that gives you 35,000 places to go with your mutt (click on the photo to go to the site). None of which is this person's front yard.
Happy Monday.

How to dress up an Electrical Box

Cable

Say the electric company places a box on your land... so you can have all of the advantages of electricity (Amish need not read further... but if you're Amish and you're reading this... are you really Amish?). Now you have a big white or green box on your property... what do you do to dress it up a little?

Why.... let some greenery grow up and around it.

And that's Sunday.
Happy Day.

Time to give up?

Assembly 3

This for sale sign has been up for a long long time. Perhaps it's time to either renew the sign, or resign to the fact that this property isn't going to sell...

I'll bet if you're ready to relocate to Kyle... Franke Real Estate would make you a sweet deal on this land!
If you buy it.. tell-em Kyle Daily Photo sent you. It won't mean anything to him... but I'd get a hoot out of it.

Happy Saturday.

Some Assembly Required Part 3

Assembly 3

At the beginning of this month I posted the Second part of my series called " Some Assembly Required " (click on link to go to "Part 2" which links to the original). I wonder if this home is a "For Sale" or it alread has an owner...

All I'm saying is I don't think I'd have chose that color.

Happy Friday!
Hope your Thanksgiving weekend is going well.

Hundred Year Flood

HYF

Last Friday the Lucky Cup Coffee House hosted a Happy Hour with the Austin/Santa-Fe band Hundred Year Flood (click photo to go to their page...and download the free song "Rich Man's War"). It was a good time. You shoulda been there. Since you weren't... here's a photo from the night.

Happy Thanksgiving all.
I'm thankful that interesting people come through Kyle and allow me to photograph them... and interesting things and people already exist here.

Celebrity Guest Shot - Peter French

Semi

This shot of the new City Hall in Kyle was taken by Peter French, former president of the Chamber of Commerce and one of the developers in the city. His Benchmark Land Development actually developed the land I'm sitting on right now... my neighborhood, Plum Creek.

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I'll be away from an internet connection tomorrow.. so I'll post my shot LATE when I get home.

Keep On Truckin'.

Semi

Because Kyle is one of the "little cities" in the Austin to San Antonio corridor, it's got a truckstop. The Best Fuel Stop (Conoco) is a good place for truckers to park (pictured), shower, and sleep.

Happy Tuesday!

I caught you diggin' it.

Meter

I don't care HOW much you may like this photo... the instructions are painfully obvious. DO NOT DIG.
Can you dig it? I hope not. You're not supposed to.

Apparently there's some electrical lines... since it says GTE...which was swallowed by Verizon...
Happy Monday!

Home In Progress

Meter

While driving around one of the new subdivisiona east side of IH-35 (Kyle is kind of split between east and west via the highway) I came across this home. Nothing out of the ordinary at first glance. It made me laugh though because I instantly thought of the ad for the home.. "New Home... 2 1/2 baths. Open floor plan"

Welcome to Kyle... RRXing

Meter

If you've ever been to Kyle.. you've done this... waited for a train.
Up until a few months ago, when a train went through town it cut the west side of the city from the east side. Nobody was going in or out from IH-35 for a few minutes (a real pain for emergencies). Plus, my wife works in San Marcos, TX (10 minutes south) and if she gets caught by a train in San Marcos on the way home... she'll be caught by the same train in Kyle 10 minutes later.. kind of funny the first 10 times.... or if you're not in the car.

Well.. I finally had my camera close to me when a train passed. This was an AmTrack passenger train so it was only about 6 cars long and it travelled at about 45mph so I waited for all of 20 seconds. Usually they are cargo trains that are a mile long and go about 20mph.

Happy Friday.
If you're in the area... come on by The Lucky Cup tonight for a Community Happy Hour.

Basketball Court... Needs repairs

Meter

While driving down a side road in Kyle I passed by a cool shop called "Great Big Signs." It's one of those places you don't find unless it's by accident...or because you're invited but Great Big Signs are the ones who have done a lot of really cool sculptures in town..and you may know their work from Freebirds! World Burritos..they did those sculptures as well.

Anyhow... next door to them is this neat old shack of a place called "Green Oaks." What made me stop was the basketball backdrop... that struck me as just odd enough to snap a photo.

Happy Thursday.

Get it all out of you now...

Meter

I was driving by my church yesterday in "Old Town Kyle" and saw someone was putting a sidewalk in. The first thing I thought was "awesome..the kids from the elementary school (in the background there) will have somewhere safe to walk." Then I looked closer and saw someone was walking up and down the sidewalk already. Made me laugh.

I hope they get it all out of them before they pour the concrete....
Happy Wednesday.

I don't know who she is... but I'd sure like to meter!

Meter

This old meter is outside an abandoned building in town. Sometimes we take things like this that are rusty and don't work and leave them out for the elements to continue to do their work on them.... until someone comes along and does one of two things.... sees it as trash and junks it or sees it as a treasure and displays it proudly in their home.

I just took a photo so I woldn't get my hands rusty trying to bring it home.

Happy Tuesday

Thrifty

Rainbow

Here's the Kyle Library Thrift Shop (100 W Lockhart St). I've not been inside yet, but from what I hear it's a bargain hunter's dream... someone on "Judy's Book" which is kind of like Consumer Reports for businesses by people said:

This is a great place to go treasure hunting, they have a large selection of merchandise ranging from clothing to miscellaneous household items. You never know what you will find and since the merchandise changes frequently you should visit often. The prices are reasonable and sometimes you can find exceptional deals

I just thought it was a neat little place... and you can't see it in this photo but people drop off their items (much like Goodwill) around the side...and there was a big sign that said "NO MATTRESSES" which made me shudder a little to think someone would want to set a mattress out in the sun...(but then I go back to my flea market post from a few weeks ago and I'm not as surprised)

Happy Monday!

Rainbow Time

Rainbow

Never know what you'll catch in your own back yard...literally. I can almost see the bad weather turn nice in this shot... I took this right after a rainstorm (the last rain we've had..about two weeks ago). Maybe this rainbow was God's way of saying... enjoy the wet..it'll be a while until you see it again...

Happy Sunday.

Pawn one for me

Pawn

Here's a shot of the city's Pawn shop. I've never actually been in there..but they are having a permanent Clearance Sale. Maybe I'll happen in there some day.

I've noticed that EVERY pawn shop I drive by has lawn mowers and bikes in front of the store.... I guess when you're in need of money the lawn and two-wheelers are the first to go.

Happy Saturday!

The End of the Tracks

tracks

In case you ever wondered where the railroad ends... It's in Kyle. I shot this next to the old (closed) Hays County Co Op...off the acccess road to IH-35.

I know George Strait has a song "Where The Sidewalk Ends" but not sure if there's a "Where the Railroad Ends" song.

Anyhow... Happy Friday!

Some Assembly Required Part 2

Christmas

About a month ago, I posted a photo of the foundation of a home in a post called " Some Assembly Required " (click on link to go to the page). I decided it may be fun to check back in and see how the assembly is going. This photo was taken about a week ago...

Looks like we're building a 2-story!
Happy Thursday!

What Day Is It Again?

Christmas

When I checked my calendar it's early November...but the City of Kyle put up their Christmas decorations already. I noticed that businesses are doing this earlier and earlier as the years go by. Soon... Halloween will be gobbled up by Christmas too... I'd rather celebrate one holiday at a time... Thanksgiving anyone?

This photo is of the tree in the middle of the square that houses Old City Hall. It's a beautiful tree... I'm sure all of the decorations will be beautiful when they are up (they always are) but I still think it's a little early.

Happy Wednesday!

Vote

corn

Voting is when people make a decision by saying what they want. It can be for getting a leader, passing a law, and other things. When people are done voting, the votes are counted (often by machines) and the side that gets the most votes wins.

America... please vote today.
Thanks.

Happy Tuesday.

Butterfly

It's a warmer day today than the last week... looks like the coldfront of the moment is gone... I'm actually in shorts and a t-shirt today. I posted this photo of the butterfly to hopefully warm others up as well.

Happy Monday.

San Vicente Cemetery.

corn

This is one of the smaller cemeteries in Kyle, the San Vicente Cemetery. To me everything from the angels at the enterance to the well-worn single set of tire tracks under the sign signify a dignified and respectful burial area. I don't know much else..other than I think it makes a nice photo.

Happy Sunday.

Category 3:
The Last Three... two little ones and a cornnose!

corn
A family brought some old kids clothes for a couple of scarecrows... think one family make this one and the next... This was my first baby scarecrow I'd ever seen.

corn
Here's the other little kidcrow... Reminds me of a song... "Hayhead the Scarecrow with a Spongebob Sqarepants shirt... and a corncob mouth and a corncob nose...and two eyes made out of corncobs....Hayhead the Scarecrow..."

corn
I keep thinking this scarecrow hails from Boston and is a Sox fan... I don't know why.

I hope you enjoyed this series of scarecrows.
Happy Saturday!

Category 2:
Scarecrows That Look Like Scarecrows - Traditional...

corn
Winner of the "Most Traditional" scarecrow in the competition... these guys really worked on this one. Looked awesome!

corn
Scarecrow-clown. My wife would hate this one.. she has a fear of clowns... and...well.. a scarecrow as a clown... scarry. Fitting.

corn
This soldier is actually wearing the uniform of the husband of the husband/wife combo that put this together. He's also the guy that had the drill...which saved the day. Military folks are Sooooooo prepared.

Scarecrows ROCK...

In order to celebrate fall... I'm going to post a scarecrow a day for the next few days.... These scarecrows were made last weekend as part of the Wildflower Seed and Stomp by residents of my neighborhood. They are all pretty awesome.

I'll post three of them everyday (there are nine in all)...so as to not draw this out... but I thought they all should be seen. Such great work!
Unfortunately some vandals in the area destroyed a few of them...so they are no longer on display in the field. They looked great when they were all together though.

So... here's what they looked like the day they were born.

Category 1:
The Funny Ones...

corn
This beachball headed pretty was created by a family of four... I think the two boys had a great time.. and the mother and father were having a "ball" making the head work.

corn
I called this one Dolly Parton as a Mexican Wrestler.... This was the first victim of violence... the mask and hair were "lifted" about 24 hours after this shot was taken.

corn
My family made this one... the funny thing is.. I really need a new broom, but I'd rather put a face on one and turn it into a scarecrow than sweep. Yes.. those are my clothes... dig the gold Hawaiian shirt? On Halloween we had it up in our front yard and a trick-or-treater said "your brother looks cold" as he walked off... funny kid....real funny!

Theme Time..

The 1st of every month is Theme Day for Daily Photo Bloggers.
This month's theme: "Something that's about to disappear soon"

Well... I've been really excited about The Beach Boys playing Kyle, Texas... but that is going to disappear... opinions differ why the concert was moved from Kyle to Austin's Travis County Expo Center... and the truth will someday make itself clear hopefully (I'll give you a hint of my opinion... I'm very embarassed to be a resident of Hays County right now). Anyhow... my photo of the day is of the banner Thunderpalooza had to put up on their site yesterday,

corn

If you're in Austin this weekend... please support this great cause.
Shame it couldn't be in town.

UPDATE: IT WAS POSTPONED.... NO CONCERT.
